South Carolina is like a passion project for me. Every year, several draftable prospects emerge, especially on defence, so I have had the chance to watch a lot of the Gamecocks under Shane Beamer. They are equal parts frustrating as exciting, and that has been no more applicable than the past few weeks. An ill-disciplined affair in Tuscaloosa was followed by a heartbreaker at home to Kentucky and then a blowout win on the road to a ranked Florida Gators team. Like many that have come before him, South Carolina DB Vicari Swain could look better in the pros than he has in Columbia, South Carolina and had a huge momentum-changing pick in that Florida win. Check out my detailed scouting report on Swain below:
Background & Measurables
Name: Vicari Swain
College: South Carolina
Year: Redshirt Junior
Size: 6’0, 193 pounds
Position/Scheme Fit: Versatile bump-and-run cornerback in a flex-nickel defense
Former 4-star athlete in the 2024 class out of Carrollton, Georgia. He chose South Carolina over Vanderbilt, Maryland and Colorado. He was a three-phase contributor in High School, and that has continued into his college career. In 2023, he saw brief action in each of the first three games of the season, then did not appear again. He was a reserve cornerback in 2024 and saw action in all 13 games. He was credited with 13 tackles, including 11 solo stops, and recorded 1.0 sack, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one quarterback hurry.
Returning to Columbia in 2025, he played in all 12 games, playing cornerback on defence and returning punts on special teams. He earned post-season All-SEC honours as a return specialist from the league’s 16 coaches (3rd team), Phil Steele (2nd team), Sports Info Solutions (1st team) and PFSN (3rd team). That was because he posted 28 tackles, including 24 solo stops, to go along with one sack, two interceptions, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles. He was part of one heck of a cornerback duo last fall, with Swain lining up across from second-rounder Brandon Cisse. In 2026, the versatile CB already has 3 PBUs and a pick, which he picked up in last week’s upset win in Gainesville over the #16-ranked Gators.
Scouting Report
Strengths
Has coverage scheme versatility, but might excel best as an underneath corner in robber.
Fast enough to bump and run with some quicker receivers and can match stride for stride.
Tremendous ball skills with a nose for the football. Is a threat to house it with the ball in his hands.
Decent size and tackle technique despite not having a huge background for it.
Development Points
Gives up too much of a cushion in man coverage on the outside.
Gets lost a bit in coverage at times and struggles to match routes consistently.
Takes some bad angles against the run. Needs to get more consistent taking on blocks.
Change of direction lets him down in zone when he's asked to trail.
Conclusion
Swain is a versatile weapon for the Gamecocks, playing mostly as a boundary CB, but the possibilities may be endless as to how he could be used in the right situation. His speed and versatility are the first things that jump off his film, but he also has high-level ball skills, showing it with his pick in his most recent game vs Florida. His tackling and physicality are hit and miss, while the South Carolina secondary looks disjointed more often than not, which could be scheme, but also could be the players. Either way, I like Swain on Day 2 as a versatile chess piece for DCs, and he may get drafted higher than his play on the field, like so many Gamecock defenders before him.
